Zomtober 2013 - Week 1
Being a Sunday, it is time to post my first photo for the work I have done for Zomtober 2013.
I painted up two WW2 Commandos (who are filling the role of survivors) and one Nazi zombie.
I still can't get over how shiny the matt varnish is I use. |
As you can tell I only paint to get figures on the table, and not as master pieces.
The angle of the face on the zombie makes it hard to see his red eyes, but that should be easier to make out on the zombies I have to follow this photo.
The arm band on the zombie is not what you are thinking it is either. I created my own arm band, and the symbol on it is different to normal. I will reveal more about this in future posts as I am including it with the back story for my game setting.

For Matt varnish that really is shiny! I do like the grey skin tone on the zombie it goes well with the black uniform.
I am now "Officially" intrigued about the arm band.
The matte varnish I used on my Zomtober minis behaved just like the varnish you used on your minis. Your minis look great. I too, paint my figures to tabletop standard, not as museum pieces. Look forward to reading your future posts regarding your game's backstory.
Great job so far Shelldrake. intrigued at the armband symbol now. Do you use the flash on your camera? When taking pics of any figure with matt barnish it will cause a reflection effect. I get it with my own to.
The grey skin colour works great against the black!
I think you are being too harsh on yourself. That is a great paint job.
Looks great. As for the paint job, as long as you've achieved what you were aiming for I think it's a job well done.
I got the same evil varnish. I had 17ml bottle of Vallejo and it was perfect, their 60ml bottle just ends up with a shiny effect and it really irritates me. Perhaps a coat too thick?
Very nice Shelldrake, a good start.
Nicely done, especially the walker. :)
That is one seriously mean zombie. I love the look of this project, can't wait to find out more.
Have you seen the zombie movie DEAD SNOW?
All looks great. Intrigued about how it will be different from history (obviously apart from the zombies).
I can't shake an appalling 'Dead's Army' pun from my head though.
They're good paint jobs in my book and are ideal wargaming pieces which, like mine, were never intended to win any competitions.
Thanks for the comments guys
@Simon - yeah, I used a flash, but they are very shiny even without the flash.
@Mathyoo - I am using a 200 ml bottle of varnish that the biggest art galleries use here in Australia to protect art work. It supposedly dries without a trace, enhances the colours, stops fungal attack and is non yellowing :-P
@Lord Siwoc - absolutely. One of my fav zombie movies :-D
Great job on these. I have noticed that the flash really shines on my matte varnish as well. I use liquitex.
